Visit the house where William Herschel made his monumental discovery of the planet Uranus in 1781, using a telescope of his invention. This discovery helped to double the known size of our solar system. Following the great astronomers of the Renaissance, Herschel was dedicated to advancing the science of telescope-building. His work was recognized and rewarded by King George III.
The Herschel Museum of Astronomy is a tribute to the remarkable achievements of the Herschels, who were talented musicians and distinguished astronomers. William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus in 1781 using a telescope of his design from this house. His observations helped to double the known size of the solar system. He was a follower of the great astronomers of the Renaissance and advanced the science of telescope-making. For his work, he was honoured by King George III and also received the Copley Medal. Caroline Herschel also made a significant contribution to the field of astronomy. The Herschels’ work has undoubtedly impacted modern science and space exploration.
The late Sir Patrick Moore, who was a patron of the museum, described William Herschel as “the first man to give a reasonably accurate picture of the shape of our star-system or galaxy, the best telescope-maker of his time, and possibly the greatest observer who ever lived.”
The museum offers many fascinating features, including Herschel’s workshop, his music room, and a delightful 18th-century formal garden where Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781 using a telescope of his construction.
There are no food or drink facilities at the Museum, but you can find restaurants and cafes nearby that offer a variety of food and drinks.
