Overview

From tiny tots to the young at heart, everyone is enchanted by these romantic castle ruins perched on a hilltop with stunning views across Purbeck. So pack a picnic basket, grab the camera, and explore this iconic and evocative survivor of centuries gone by.

Things to do

Corfe Castle is an incredible family day out. Explore the castle ruins and climb up through the castle to discover one thousand years of history, including its time as a royal palace, fortress, and family home.

As families explore the ruins, get ready to spot the ‘murder holes’, count the arrow loops, and immerse in history. At the top of the mound, visitors will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Purbeck. Plus, those lucky enough to visit at the right time, might even catch a glimpse of the heritage steam train winding through the countryside.

But that’s not all! For families with kids, there’s even more fun to be had, with a children’s quiz and trail, as well as special school holiday activities, like family treasure trails. Don’t forget to check out the permanent Wildlife Walk around the grounds, where little ones can spot ravens, rare butterflies, and fluffy sheep!

Just remember, while pushchairs and baby back carriers are allowed, be aware of the steep slopes and uneven surfaces.

Food & Drink

At the entrance to Corfe Castle, in the heart of the village, there is a cosy 18th-century tea room and garden with unique close-up views of the castle.

A perfect place to refuel after a walk around Corfe Castle or its surrounding area. The interior of this former cottage still contains many of its original features, If the weather’s good, there is a garden area, which offers uninterrupted views of the castle ruins.

The tea room at Corfe Castle serves a delicious menu of hot and cold food, drinks, cakes, and bakes.
