Overview

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens originally began as a simple kitchen garden way back in 1765. Over time, it has expanded to a massive 20-acre land, with a diverse collection of exotic plants that includes many newly-discovered species. Explore this botanical paradise, and be amazed by the incredible beauty and diversity of nature.

Things to do

At Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens fun and excitement awaits! Take a stroll along the Secret Walk, explore the Summer House, and follow the Sculpture Trail. Cross the waterways using the cute little bridges, and enjoy the flat terrain with minimal gravel, perfect for pushchairs.

Get ready for some breathtaking views at the top of the gardens and see the stunning Portland Island and Chesil Beach while relaxing by the lily pond. Watch the carp and dragonflies whilst taking photographs or sketching these on a pad. For families feeling adventurous then bring a bug and bird book along, and see what else can be found. Don’t forget a picnic and paddling gear.

Something the parents will love – a Children’s Play Area! So why not take a break while the kids run around and have fun?

Visit the coffee shop or browse the gift shop. For those wanting to bring some of the beautiful flowers home then head to the fantastic plant centre, where blooms can be purchased to grow.

Food & Drink

There’s a delightful and charming café where visitors can indulge in a range of scrumptious snacks and refreshing drinks. The café serves up delicious espresso coffee, tea, hot chocolate, local beer, cider, and single-serve wines during the day.

The kitchen bakes cakes daily, and the café has all the families’ favourites, from cream teas to gluten-free and vegan options. The talented chefs use locally sourced ingredients from trusted suppliers to prepare homemade food with love and care.

The café understands that everyone has different dietary requirements and allergies and provides gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan products. Dishes can also be adjusted to suit individual needs.

The café is conveniently located just before the entrance to the Swannery, so there’s no admission charge to use the catering facilities.
