Overview

You’ll find the impressive beam engine in Taylor’s engine house at the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. Originally powered by high-pressure steam boilers, it’s a reminder of Cornwall’s past as a famous hub of industry, engineering, and innovation. It’s one of the largest surviving Cornish beam engines in the world.

Things to do

Visiting a historical mine in Cornwall can be an exciting experience for people of all ages. The sight of old machines, sometimes in action, and the opportunity to learn about the experiences of the hardy miners from bygone days is fascinating. It’s also interesting to imagine what it would have been like to be present during the heyday of Cornish mining. Therefore, East Pool Mine is an attraction that should be experienced.

There are various areas to explore during a day out here. One is Taylor’s Engine House, built in the early 1920s. It houses the 19th-century Cornish beam engine, which is one of the largest surviving engines of its kind in the world.

Another area is the Discovery Centre, which was once the compressor house. It is now home to an exhibit of mining relics.

The Winder House is now used as a cinema showcasing footage of Cornish mining, and it still contains the giant foundations of the machinery it once housed.

Michell’s Engine House is another area to explore. It was built in the 19th century and is home to the last whim engine built in Cornwall. Currently, it is used in local community partnerships.
