Things to do

The River Tees starts as a small stream on the North Pennines’ fells. As it gains momentum, it reaches the top of the Whin Sill rock at Forest-in-Teesdale before suddenly dropping 21 meters into a plunge pool below. This creates an awe-inspiring sight that visitors can witness firsthand by taking a picturesque woodland trail to the base of the falls.

Visitors can explore the area’s rich history by discovering ancient settlements, lead mining heritage, and ice age features. A short walk along the river from Bowlees Visitor Centre takes visitors to Summerhill Force and Gibson’s Cave. Legend has it that the cave was once the hideout of a 16th-century outlaw.

Further down the river, visitors will find Low Force Waterfall. A 1.5 to 2-hour walk along the Pennine Way offers stunning views of Teesdale and takes visitors to the falls and Bowlees Visitor Centre. Along the Tees Bank, visitors can enjoy the vibrant wildflowers and cross the exhilarating Wynch Bridge. The return journey can either be made via the same route or by taking public footpaths on the opposite side of the river.
