Mutton Cove is a little-known gem of a beach just a couple of miles north of Hayle in Cornwall, which has breathtaking views and is ideal for a long walk out with the family where you may get to see some seals…
Mutton Cove is a renowned spot for climbers and is distinguished for its fossilized remains. Blacknor Point and Mutton Cove are known to be excellent fishing spots for large Conger, and it’s been reported that local charter boats come in close to the cove following large shoals of herring. Scuba divers also frequent the area and if you fancy giving scuba diving a try, this is the ideal spot!
The cove is filled with historical artifacts and has seen previous quarrying and numerous shipwrecks and maritime incidents, including the German liner Bulow, the Ehen, a French barque, and the English cargo vessel Myrtledene.
If you’re interested in spotting seals, it’s important to plan your visit during low tide, as during high tide, the beach disappears and seals go to the sea to hunt for food. But if you time it well, you’ll be rewarded with a great experience.
There is a cafe nearby, but you are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the picturesque scenery whilst trying to spot some seals!
