Overview

Located atop East Cliff in Bournemouth, the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum is a preserved family home offering breathtaking sea views. The gallery features remarkable architecture, exquisite objects worldwide, and celebrated British artwork. Visitors can relax in the cafe or explore the stunning gardens, which are particularly enjoyable for children. It’s an ideal excursion for families passionate about art and history.

Things to do

Come and explore the home of Merton and Annie Russell-Cotes as it was in 1901. The house has been preserved in its original state, and families can enjoy beautiful artwork and collections during their visit.

In the main hall, families will be greeted with the grandeur of the late Victorian era. The drawing room boasts a fine collection of decorative art. The dining room and conservatory contain some of the finest decorations in the house, and the morning room, bedrooms, boudoir, and more display beautiful objects from around the world.

There are also four art galleries for families to enjoy, showcasing larger artwork and statues from the time. The works on display include biblical, mythological, and literary subjects, landscapes, small genre scenes, and animal pieces.

The garden was originally created as a private paradise for the Russell-Cote family. Wild sand dunes were transformed into a beautiful tropical garden that children and English garden lovers will enjoy. The garden features marble and bronze sculptures, a cosy summerhouse, a Victorian stone grotto, and a fountain. There is also a stunning Japanese garden complete with goldfish ponds, bridges, and a fountain.

Children’s events are held throughout the year, including school holiday activities. Children can be inspired by the beautiful home and participate in craft activities or explore the house and uncover hidden treasures with a fun trail.
