The Druid’s Temple is situated in the Swinton Bivouac woods, near Leighton Reservoir, and surrounded by beautiful moorland and the Yorkshire Dales landscape. The area is rich in other standing stones and popular for walkers, families, and bird watchers. The ‘temple’ is easily accessible by foot from Swinton Bivouac’s reception and is located along a public footpath leading from the road to the main site of the folly.
Explore several walking trails within the woodland, which are available to walkers with the kind permission of the Swinton Estate.
The Druid’s Temple, located near Masham, is not genuine. Instead, it is a folly constructed in the 19th century. Its design is inspired by stone circles and other famous prehistoric monuments, such as Stonehenge.
Interestingly, the structure was created to provide employment opportunities for the local community. At the time, William Danby, a wealthy landowner, paid workers daily shillings for their labour.
Despite its age, the Druid’s Temple remains an intriguing and atmospheric location. Although its true origin is widely known, myths and rumours about mystical practices have grown. However, most visitors view the Druid’s Temple as a peaceful and serene location for a picnic or stroll. It is conveniently located near parking and refreshments and is maintained by the Swinton Estate.
A wonderful cafe is located near the parking, offering a selection of treats and refreshments.
